Fuel your inspiration with a daily art practice

As an artist who also teaches art, the lines between work and play start to blur. Sometimes things just flow and other times it’s like I am hitting my head against the wall. This is when an art practice can make such an impact. The act of creating something daily or weekly is a commitment to keep going and where artistic ideas will flow.

I want to share with you some practical tips that will help you maximize your own daily art practice, spark some inspiration, and help you to keep going.

Embrace the Mundane

Choose to look at every day objects with curiosity and observation. How can you take something unattractive or every day and show it in a new and different light? Perhaps with unique colors, shapes or brush strokes.

Look at the World Around You

Look for inspiration in the world around you – the beauty of nature or every day moments. Watch how light falls on an object. Interact a little bit longer. Take photos or mental pictures for your library of moments to draw from.

Explore Other Mediums

Your art practice is a space for exploration and experimentation. Allow yourself to play and try new techniques, materials, and subject matters. Try something more tactile or something where the step by step process is slightly different. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. It will help to unlock different perspectives and build onto what you already know.

Remember, it’s not about creating something perfect. Rather, it’s about immersing yourself in the joy of creation and embracing your artistic journey. Enjoy the process and let your art evolve organically.
